I didn’t get any sleep last night. The muggles next door were having a “small” get together last night.
Blimey, couldn’t you have tried one of those charm things?

Gwen was in a strange mood. She felt unusual; like someone had punched her in the gut and poked her in the eyes at the same time. She didn’t quite know how to feel other than what she did know. She liked Leo. She hadn’t liked anyone in years, not since him. The thought of being in a relationship scared her. She didn’t want to be tied down, and she didn’t want the commitment. Only she did, and that was confusing. It was her break. She didn’t want to linger around for an hour at work so she decided to walk. It was gloomy today, as it always usually was. Her hair was up in a messy bun and she was in her uniform. An unlit cigarette hung from her lips.
She spotted Elias, whom she had bumped into a few days ago, sitting on a bench. He was definitely the last person she wanted to run into, but he was alone, and she was too. She didn’t want to look silly alone as he did. She walked quickly to the bench and sat. He was slouching and she sat up for good measure. “No work today?” she said, pulling out a red lighter and lighting her cigarette. She looked towards him as she blew the smoke out of her mouth.
Elias glanced up after a while, a little surprised at being addressed. When he recognized the girl, he jumped a little, startled. After composing himself, he smiled brightly and made a vague gesture with his hand, a sort of wave. He suddenly became aware of his own posture, and sat up a little straighter. “Wha- oh, no, no. No work today. None at all.” He cleared his throat, then added, just for good measure, “my day off, actually. I always take days off on- on-” What day was it? He bit the inside of his cheek as he thought, then shook his head. Better not hesitate for too long. She might notice he was lying.
“Well, you know. Whatever day it is today. Day off. Yes. I’m not skiving. I don’t do that. Not at all.” Nodding furiously, he finally clamped his mouth shut. He wasn’t exactly sure why he had decided to lie (he had been told numerous times that he wasn’t particularly good at it), but he decided not to dwell on it. “Oh, and hello, again. Gwen. Gwen? Gwen. Didn’t expect to see you again after last time. Funny, ain’t it?” He didn’t find it all that funny. But he was nervous, and wanted to talk about something else. He bit his thumb as he watched her, head tilted to the side, as if terribly interested.

As Elias walked aimlessly around Hyde Park, he thought of all the things he would have been doing if he had bothered showing up to work today. He would have been- well, he would have been doing a lot of things. Sweeping the floor, cleaning the counter, washing the dishes, etcetera. But resting had seemed like the better option of the two, so he had decided to do that.
It was a school-day, which meant there was no yelling or screaming or running. No kids. It was calm, and peaceful, just the way he liked it. He considered lying down on the grass, but it had rained in the morning, so he thought it wouldn’t be such a good idea. Instead, he walked over to one of the benches and sat down.
At his remark, Gwen gave him a scowl. She wanted to smack him, and smack him hard. For a few moments it was like they were in a staring contest. She didn’t remove her eyes from his and she realized how pretty he was in the face. He had thick, full lips with the prettiest eyes. He looked more like a girl than a male, to be honest, but nonetheless attractive. Soon she yanked the cigarette out of his mouth and removed her’s. She then pressed the two tips together and sucked in, igniting the stick.
“Here,” She handed his cigarette to him after taking her own puff and throwing her’s on the ground. She stared at him for a moment before rolling her eyes. “You don’t know me, do you? We went to school together,” she said, looking around before waving an invisible wand around. “Don’t you remember?”
Elias’ eyes widened, as did his smile. “Oh!” he breathed, taking a step back. ”That’s it! Hello!” The cigarette danced between his lips as he talked, as if he had forgotten about it. He squinted at her, wondering how he had missed the possibility before. “I’m Elias! Elias Barbary. Lovely to meet- no! Lovely to see you! We’ve already met. Ha. Ha. That’s funny, right there.” Amused, he averted his eyes, focusing back on smoking, which was what he had been there to do in the first place.
He was quiet after that, sneaking glances over at her, now facing another problem. He didn’t remember her name, and he thought it would be rude to ask. Maybe she would say it. He didn’t remember much about her at all, to be honest, and what he did remember was useless.

He managed to get a job. It was nothing fancy, nothing he should be proud of (or so his father said, when Elias told him), but it was something, at least. A restaurant of some sort- a shabby old place near Hyde Park, with stools instead of proper seats, and banners advertising the 2008 Summer Olympics. Elias didn’t mind. He liked it there. And besides, if he kept this job for a decent amount of time, he would be able to afford that new Batman comic book that he had been dying to read, pay the rent, buy proper food.
Everything was working out well. Which was nice, for a change. He wouldn’t have to spend day after day after day locked in his flat. He would be out doing something, talking to people, and all the works. He was very excited about it, needless to say. So excited, in fact, that on his first day of work, he woke up exactly two hours earlier than he had to.
He woke up beaming, jumped out of bed, had a shower, put on his uniform and jacket, grabbed his keys and was out the door. He decided to take the tube, partly because he had forgotten to eat anything, and was worried that if he attempted apparating he would throw up. And partly because he wanted to arrive to work like a Normal Person. So he walked to the nearest train station, bought a ticket and waited patiently for his train to arrive.

I love you”
